The perks of online teaching

Prior to the rapid spread of Covid-19, I was fairly happy teaching 3 days a week at a local music school. I had a full roster of students, and it was fun to walk into the school and be welcomed by a cacophony of drums, guitar, piano, and voice. Even better? Laughter and high-fives all round. Band Gig School of Music is a fun place to work, and I miss it.

I feel lucky that I had previous experience with online lessons. When it became apparent that things were changing quickly, I adapted and I shared what I knew with my colleagues so we could ride this out together. We all thought it would be a month. Now it’s a new way of life.

I have spent the last several months perfecting my online setup and deepening my teaching practice. What it made me realize is that I love to teach beginners. If you like to sing and are curious about the mechanics of your voice, I would love to teach you. A beginner doesn’t mean you have no experience singing. It just means you have never studied professionally. You may be a very well known songwriter who wants more confidence and freedom when you perform. You may have been your choir soloist in high school or the star in your local theater production. You may do fine on your own, but you’re looking to get better and feel in control of your voice. That’s where I come in with humor, knowledge, and plenty of positive reinforcement.

The online aspect has finally gotten me back into making youtube videos, and has given me and my students much more flexibility with lessons. No more Boston traffic. No more forgotten supplies. I can also give a lesson to anyone in the world. That’s pretty awesome.
